100 Mile Canoe Test
The 100-mile canoe test is a personal challenge, not a race. Participants call on their skill, determination and stamina to achieve the 100-mile target over four days of paddling along the River Severn. The achievement brings a sense of personal fulfilment that will remain with the individual for life. The British Canoe Union works closely with Clubs for Young People to add value to the canoeing experience by advising and assisting groups with their preparation. Each day the canoeists leave the base camp and head off to the river to paddle a specified stretch of water. In 2009 the 100 mile challenge was completed by fifteen young people and three of those where young people from MSYC.

Surrey Clubs for Young People has developed a Youth Leadership Training programme which seeks to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and resources to undertake leadership roles in their youth club and community. The culmination of the programme is a highly intensive, challenging residential course in Scotland run by SCYP. It involves young people living together for a week learning about team work, trust, managing conflict and challenging themselves to achieve the unthinkable. The group includes young carers, young people with ADHD, from school inclusion projects, from areas of rural isolation, young people not in education training or employment, and in the care of social services. Young people have said that the course helps them confront their fears, builds confidence and helps them make better decisions about their lifestyle.
