About Us

The Mid Surrey Young Carers Project was established in 1997 to offer a wide range of practical and emotional support to young carers in the Mid Surrey area. Each young carer and their family have their own specific needs. We offer a range of services based on individual needs assessments and take a flexible approach to develop services tailored to each unique situation

MSYC:

  • Support young carers (up to the age of 18) in both an individual and group setting around issues of caring.
  • Provide an advocacy service for young carers.
  • Work with young carers to enable them to achieve their full potential as young people.
  • Raise awareness and promote the needs of young carers within a multi-agency setting.

MSYC knows that young carers need much more than just support for their caring role. They also need support for their whole family. It is important to us to involve the parents or guardians as much as possible as a way of empowering and enabling them, rather than undermining their role.

A full assessment of needs of individual young carers is carried out in an initial meeting. We aim to find out interests and ambitions so that we can encourage young people to go on and achieve their full potential.

We aim to have our carers’ views heard.Working like this is not just good practice, it is also a legal requirement. The Children Act says young people must be treated with respect and this means (amongst other things) that young people must be listened to.

Listening to young people is at the heart of all MSYC Project work, but our work in advocacy especially shows MSYC’s commitment to giving children and young people a voice.

Our work is guided by the Every Child Matters learning outcomes that state ‘all children and young people should’
